VISA chip not working

My VISA credit card (from AIB) was replaced coz the chip was not working. The first time it happens while I was abroad, I thought that was the reason, I then used it in Ireland but no luck either.
I can use the card to buy on line (flights for instance) so the card is active and working fine when I don't use the chip.

AIB could not find any fault from their end and agreed to send me a new one.
The new card worked for a while without any issue. Today the chip has again stopped working. I cannot "tap" or insert the card in any payment console, It only works when using the card numbers on line.
Has any one had this same experience? it would be good to know if this is something that happens out there to others.
I have the card in the same wallet as other cards that have a chip so perhaps this could be the issue? A technical fault? it has never happened before though.

Avant card a few years ago, just before going on holidays it stopped working at tills etc, replaced it and new one didn't work either, frustrating but had other cards (debit).

Do you have your card details stored in the Klarna/Stocard app on you phone? If you have, you can have in-store readers scan the phone instead.

Unlikely as the chips are "static devices" and must be activated by a scanner to be read; the notion of them transmitting data and corrupting each other is very remote.

A technical fault?

Undoubtedly, maybe with the scanners concerned. Have you tried the ancient "rub it on the seat of your pants" trick? Crude, but it might just work. The card that is, not the scanners!

yes indeed! I have tried the old trick in my pants and other pants too! (not by me but done by the shop assistant! ) with no effect

Can you not add it to Apple Pay or Google Pay and use your phone to make payments. Much safer as the retailer never gets your details.

Yes I could. I also have other cards and I don't bring my phone all the time with me. That is not the issue.

What I am looking for is to see if there is a pattern here and other people have experienced the same coz that could mean that there could be a bug.
I have not contacted the provider yet coz apart from sending me another card I don't know if they will bother to check what is happening. If it is "only" me then is either an issue with my user/account or with the chip of the card which Mathepac has confirmed that it does not seem to be the case.

HI @ClubMan. I get different errors depending on the gadget but always a big red cross and some reference (i cant remember exactly) to the card not being accepted. So nothing to do with the password for instance. I will pay attention next time i use it n see what exact error i get.

Why don't you add it to Apple Pay and see if it works that way? If it does, it will eliminate some account based issues and suggest it's the card.

The fact that it doesn't work when you insert it into a payment machine indicates it is the Chip that is at fault and not the antennae on the card (which goes out from the chip and around the edge for "tap and go"). The chip is irrelevant for online payments.

Have you changed how you store the cards in a wallet etc.
