Tied into this offer with VM they are giving the hard sell on moving at least 1 mobile to VM from Vodafone which they say would make the overall charge cheaper. Didn't go into the exact figure for both the broadband and mobile combined because find Vodafone signal and service very good to-date. Presently just have Ready to Go for the usual €20 per month with Vodafone.

What are people's experiences with VM for the mobile for both signal and service? Was the move efficient?

Thanks.

Would recommend getting a cheap 3 PAYG sim and testing coverage before signing up for any VM contract
Really depends on your location / where you are using it most as you can often get small patches/black holes of coverage in certain buildings even in great coverage areas

Thanks for info. Its this type of stuff that has made me stay with Vodafone over the years.

Interesting

I am with Three and have no problems. I travel within EU quite a lot so that coverage is important to me. But if they use Three I’ve nothing to lose… and I’ll save a bit

Having no problems on Three doesn't necessarily mean no problems with a virtual operator that uses the Three network. Especially when it comes to roaming. Same for Vodafone/Eir and virtual operators that use those physical networks.

I presume it’s 5G?
As far as I can see it's still 4G only and VM don't yet offer 5G?

Mobile Coverage Map

99.7% 4G population Coverage

Virgin Mobile uses Three’s network. Which means we get access to one of the biggest networks in Ireland and can deliver 99.7% population coverage for voice calls, plus 99.7% coverage for 3G data services and 99.1% for 4G data services.

A few years back we had a few phones on unlimited plans for €5 with VM. No particular issues with reception.

But was a pain to set up and pain to port off them. I assumed the phones would be on the same account but they had split them on different accounts. But they couldn't seem to explain why they did this or work out which phone was on which account. For €15 there are easier options.

Always had billing and plan issues with VM with TV/BB. Hate changing anything with them.

VF still the best network just over priced. Currently on 48. No issues.

they couldn't seem to ... work out which phone was on which account.

It was family deal you could have up to 4 sims on the the deal. They split it into two different accounts two on each one. Just caused lots of issues with queries and they repeatedly failed to mention it. Only came to light when porting away. Which kept failing.

Been on Virgin Media's €25 plan for 9+ years, never had an issue during my roaming across Ireland. Some blackspots out in the southwest but nothing other providers had.

Remember you can always switch to another network provider who has signal in patchy areas and retain your plan.

Paid of 2 phones on their plans as well, and moved my parents several years ago onto their plans. No issues.

If they are offering €15 pm time for me and my clan to check them out. Or go Tesco Mobile, GoMo etc etc

Edit: How much of our time these days are spent in Public/Home/Free WiFi areas?

What exactly do you mean by this?

The above may not be succinct enough to the question you asked. But what I am saying is in the EU (Ireland is in the EU of course) you can change the settings in you phone re. Network Provider to one with better coverage and stay within your providers plan.

I have done this multiple times both here at home and abroad in the UK and Europe over the years. Example: A staycation in West Cork, had no coverage with VM changed my phone over to Vodafone and off I went. Similarly in the UK, just looked for the provider with the best signal whether that was EE, O2 or others.

Does that help answer the question?

I'm on 48 and if I switch from automatic to manual network selection it searches for available networks and all except 48 are listed as "forbidden" and attempting to connect to any of them fails with an error. The only network that I can connect to in Ireland is 48.

You mean roaming within your home country.

You can do it roaming but not at home afaik.
That was my understanding too but @Wandering_Dazed claims otherwise above:

Wouldn't be much point being on a better network if you could pick the cheapest one then switch to the most expensive one.

Even when abroad you only get good speeds on a network that has roaming agreements with your provider. You usually only get an option of a few of them not all of them and not an at the same speeds.
