Virgin Media contract - experiences with move to full fibre - positive or negative?

Hi All,

Contacted Virgin Media this morning about contract coming up for renewal and they did the usual jargon about having to move to full fibre because the service would be so much better and quicker. Waiving the technician call out fee of €50 and 5 minute down time for connection.

9 months at half price €40 and 3 months at €80. Because there are 2 people working from home a lot we want to stay with VM who we find good for broadband.

What experiences have others here had with the move to full fibre with VM? Positive or negative? Think we would be going from 500 mb to 1gb speed.

If we didn't have that option I would not see the point in having the service at all because those are the two stations that I would record from all the time.
 
I have full fibre and TV from Virgin, no requirement to have a streaming box so we can record fine.

FIbre is fine for us as it gets a fair amount of use, I work from home full time, 2 teenagers etc so it's always in use. certainly very reliable but without knowing what you use i for (we're not gamers for example) I couldn't say if it would suit you or not
 
Sounds like you don't have full fibre if you still have a 360 box with a hard drive?

AFAIK you do not have to have the streaming box with full fibre. An existing customer can hang on to their old 360 box. However, when upgrading they apparently push a "special offer" contract with the streaming box and then lock you in if you accept. Also, if your 360 box goes kaput they replace it with the streaming box.

I cancelled my VM broadband (no TV) by email and once the 30 days were up I ordered their fibre broadband through Bonkers at half price for 12 months. I selected self-install to try to avoid any install fee. As I was moving from cable to full fibre they had to send out a guy anyway to connect the router but there was no charge. There were a few days in between with no broadband but we just hotspotted, if that's a word, from a mobile.
 
Only way to have the 360 box with hard drive work is with co-axial cable and that would use the old network (HFC). Eventually this will be taken away and you would then have to use the streaming box with the full fibre network.
