Vat on imported goods

I'm currently not vat registered but hopefully will be from Sept 1st which means I can claim back vat on imported goods. If I order goods from outside the EU around 25th August I should receive early September. My question is can i claim back this vat? The goods were ordered and paid for to my supplier in August (when i couldn't claim vat back) but received Sept and charged by customs then so just a little unclear.
