Various Questions regarding auctioneers & letters after their names

How can one search an auctioneers background / experience without actually asking them. The auctioneer in Q has BSc MIAVI after his name. I know what this stands for, I was wondering is there any other way of searching them.

Also, is it fair to ask an auctioneer to produce documentation stating their qualifications after they have done a valuation? We had one done and I believe its off the scale. I brought in a 2nd valuer who agreed with me in saying it was about 120K off the scale. The firm who this 1st auctioneer works for is a nationwide franchise. (dont know if thats relevant to my Q)

Any advise on this would be very appreciative

most of the time the letters after estate agents names just denote one of the various auctioneer associations

Valuations are a matter of opinion, especially when you consider that property values are always changing. Their usefulness tends to depend on the valuer's specific knowledge of the property, its location etc. It has nothing to do with whether they have educational qualifications or are members of particular Institutes.

Go to iavi.ie and they have member listings with qualifications. If he is qualified are you going to go with the 120k off the scale value?

the 1st valuer was about 29 - 30 yrs old. Yes he is a member of the IAVI, i checked the site. The 2nd valuer is a long standing auctioneer in cork with an excellent reputation, hes in the business 32 years this year he tells me.


Also - if house is incomplete (still alot of work to be finished) should it not be a quantity surveyor (or chartered surveyor i think) value it as opposed to an auctioneer? (dont know if I have this TOTALLY WRONG)??

How do you mean? I dont believe the 1st valuation is correct. Hense why I brought in a 2nd valuer.

Did you research any of the professionals that you dealt with or did you then make a sweeping generalisation just as you have done now?
