Vacant Property Refurbishment Grant

There is an abandoned property on my land that I was hoping to renovate and apply for the Vacant Property Refurbishment Grant to help in paying for the Refurbishment.

This property was converted from a farm Shed to a very simple house(fireplace, power supply) in the early 1960's and was occupied by my grandparents when my parents got married and lived in the Main House. My grandparents lived in the converted house until their death in the early 70's and was then used as a storage house after my grandparents death and has not been used as a dwelling house since.

The House my grandparents lived in was never registered as a house as it was attached to the existing farm sheds and was seen as such(farm sheds) when the land was transferred to my parents in the early 1970's .

I read that the Vacant Property Refurbishment Grant requires proof of ownership of the property that is being refurbishment . As the house that my grandparents lived in was never seen as a house and so no proof of ownership exists . Does this mean that as there is no Deed then that property is not seen as a house and so would not qualify for the Grant and would be still seen as a farm shed?

Talk to the Vacant Homes Officer in your local Co.Co. office.

The grant is intended for properties that require less than a full build to bring them back into use. Funding, even for registered properties is at the discretion of the Local Authority, so as above, talk to them to see if they will even consider it.

The next hurdle will be planning permission, a property in such a state will almost certainly require a full planning application due to the scope of works required, and where applicable, said planning permission is a pre-requisite in order to apply for the scheme.

Talk to someone familiar with the planners in the area to establish what you might be able to get planning for. Does local needs apply and would you qualify for example.
