Hi,
I was wondering if anyone has any expereince of this. My mother is a US citizen but resident here for over 40 years. She never took Irish citizenship. She just got a wonderful surpise the other day and found out that her uncle (in USA) has left all his neices & nephews and nice sum of money in his will. A great surprise to hear when you are 80!

Does anyone know if she had to pay taxes here and USA? There wont be much left if thats the case & it seems very unfair. any advice would help. Info on revenue.ie is very confusing and I think the fact that she is still a US citizen may change things.

thanks

As an non domiciled individual she will be subject to Irish CAT as she has been here for more that 5 years.

Can't comment on US position.

For Irish CAT class B threshold will apply so €30,150 is exempt (if no other gifts from this class before). Then the balance at 33% with a credit for any US tax paid.
