Hi, my husband is 71 with VHI for years but downgraded to One Plan Access Plus for the last 4 years. He's paying 916.47 for the year.

He has heart and lung issues. Was wondering what is the waiting time if he upgrades to a better plan? His renewal is coming up in December when he's 72. Any help appreciated thanks

Hi strickly,

He has full cover for heart surgery etc at the moment, for all public and hi-tech hospitals including Blackrock Clinic and Mater Private Dublin.
So the only waiting for heart related issues is in relation to private hospitals. He has 60% cover in private hospitals, so there would be a shortfall of 40% to be paid in a private hospital. The maximum waiting time when upgrading cover is 2 years and only in respect of any pre-existing illnesses.

There would be a 2 year waiting time for lung related issues in private or hi-tech hospitals on a better plan. He would be fully covered in any public
hospital for these issues.
The following plans are worth considering;

1. VHI PMI 7 10; Price 1185pa; all public, private and 3 hi-tech hospitals covered, private excess 150 x 1 max per year for all private or hi-tech
hospital admissions. Day case excess 50 per procedure in a private/hi-tech hospital. Good day to day cover on this plan, there would be a
6 month wait before this extra cover is allowed. There is 80% cover on this plan with VHI in a private/hi-tech hospital for hip or knee replacement surgery. The shortfall is 2000+ depending on the hospital. Blackrock Clinic does not pass on this charge to the patient.

2. Laya Simply Connect; price 1100pa; All public, private and 3 hi-tech hospitals covered, private/hi-tech excess 150 x 2 max for all private/hi-tech admissions per year. Day case excess 50 per procedure. Good day to day cover included. There is no 6 month waiting time applied with
Laya healthcare for extra day to day cover. Allowable straight away. 2 year upgrade waiting applies as before for pre-existing lung issues in private
hospitals.
Note; there is full cover for hip or knee replacement surgery on this plan as standard in any private or hi-tech hospital.

As the renewal date is December, there may be more offers announced soon.
