Unwanted phone calls

Heres a funny one - for the last week or so i've been getting a call on my mobile but no number shows up. It doesnt even say withheld - nothing at all comes up. Each time i answer it, it sounds like its hung up after about 2 seconds or so. I tried ringing it back but it says its not possible. I rang my mobile provider and they said they could do nothing about it except change my number. To be honest, they couldnt have been much less helpful. said i would have to report it to the guards who would then go back to my provider and ask them to look into it. Sounds like the sledgehammer/walnut route to me. Surely they can just look at their servers and see the traffic on my phone and just block it?
Anybody else have something like this happen to them? I really dont want to have to goto the hassle of changing my number.

You don't have to change your number. All the service provider is telling you is to go to the gardai and they can ask the provider to give them the number and then you can see who is calling you. The phone company are not obliged to give out phone numbers.

I know about this as I had been getting nuisance calls before on my mobile with 'private number' coming up.
