unfair work conditions

does an employee have any rights when the manager picks on the them over almost anything when in a bad mood, this has caused my friend alot of embarassment in front of other staff members as she gets very upset. they are both women and my friend has worked in the job over 2yrs now and is very pleasant and obliging, she wants to leave now as she forgot an identification tag and was told to get home and get it or she wasnt working there today, she has no transport and doesnt live in walking distance. Is this fair, she got a final warning, the other warning was over similar unfairness

1: if it is company policy for staff to wear ID tags and she has forgotten hers, then she may be within his rights to send her home for it. It may be over the top, but she may be within his rights

2: If she treats all staff in the same manner (and that is not clear from your post) then he is not necessarily being unfair, providing what she is doing is within company policy

The issue therefore is perhaps more around how the manager "picks on " the individiual concerned. Is she abusive, if your friend is on her final warning, what were the others for, did the manager follow the correct procedures etc

well the manager shouts at her when serving customers, the customers were even shocked, she doesnt seem to care whos around when shes annoyed, she has treated other members of staff the same and they are all fed up with her, most of the time she can be ok and they get along but she humiliates and offends her staff in front of others to embarass them. The other warning wasnt an official warning it was just a verbal, and it happened because of the customer scenario and the shouting, so my friend said she had enough and she was going home, i know you might think my friends causing trouble but she is a quite girl that will dig them out of a hole when ever there stuck. It makes me angry to see her so upset.

As MPsox said, is everyone being treated the same and is she in fact, in breech of company policies?

She maybe abit sensitive about being picked up on things, or maybe this manager is picking on her, hard to say with such limited information.

But as time are getting tougher, I've heard of many situations where employers are pulling staff up on things they may not have been as quick to do when times were better (and also harder to get staff). One large, international company is readily handing out warnings for every misdeamour (not hitting targets, not making enough call, latest, failure to hand in reports etc.). Probably planning on downsizing & hoping to save on redundancies and/or improve productivity.

Sorry - posts crossed....shouting in front of customers/staff is unacceptable - does she have anyone they can report this to as it may be seen as bullying.

The Manager has since called her into the office and tried to lighten things up, it was all pushed aside as usual and life goes on, this seems to be the way out of it all the time, have a little heart to heart and brush it under the carpet, well what can i say , jobs are hard to come by these days, so untill the next time , I think its terrible regardless of how hard it is on the employer, its also hard on the employees too when used as a scapegoat for their stress relief. It can be a vicious circle i suppose. thanks for your replies,

I'm sure I read this thread a few days ago!!! There seems to be people repeating threads every few days. What is happening!!!

What's happening here (even though the details are limited) is a straightforward case of firstly - unacceptable behaviour on behalf of the manager, to shout at this person for all to hear and secondly - possibly a case of bullying, if she "picks" on or victimises this member of staff. Whatever, the manager's complaints are, it is no excuse to abuse her staff in public.
