Hi I just got my new Avant card today-
Handy enough , to apply for , if anyone interested -
When I rang to cancel my Ulster credit card , I was deducted 30 euro , government charge -
I queried this , as I was quite annoyed , as I paid my usual govt stamp duty (30e) earlier in the year as I have done since it’s inception by the government.
Nothing I could say , was entertained - the reply - this is nothing to do with Ulster bank - it’s an Irish government charge - any opinion on this ??

As we have no choice but to get another credit card as Ulster are pulling out - it’s a real bonanza for the Irish government as they are getting double government duty from citizens who have no choice as the bank exits the country

This seems awful carry on

Yes, this is completely standard. It's the way Government Stamp duty is charged.

You need to get a letter of closure from UB showing stamp duty was paid. You give that ti Avant, and they won't charge you stamp duty next April.

Oh really - your very good I’ll do that so - I asked for that actually thanks , Red Onion

It's paid in arrears (or on account closure) so this is the charge you would have had to pay next April. As RedOnion said the letter of closure will cover you and Avant won't charge you in April.
