Type of fire?

Just wondering if anyone has any advice for me regarding what type of fire to choose.

We have a gas inlet thingy in the fireplace already and were thinking of changing it to an open fire...

We bought a 42" plasma and that is now over the fire place. Which type of fire would be better in this situation?

Also, which is cheaper? gas, open fire or electric?

A fire which doesn't give out too much heat would be ideal for under a plasma. See here for further details.
