TV alternative to pay to view.

Hi all...just ditched Sky and Netflix..gone too expensive and as we don't use them much anymore. ..our BB is not great and I'm not so impressed with IPTV...any recommendations please with a reliable way to get basic channels rte vm and UK FTA?...we have a satellite dish and an old roof aerial so we could use them both with Saorview..don't mind using 2 remotes....using Firestick may not work as the BB is slow, don't need Sports/Movies just basic channels. ..what are the alternatives for non techies? TIA
 
You seem to have answered your own question Saorview and satelite dish.
We use Saorview for rte etc. and have a satelite box for the UK chanels. Have a Satelite box that records so can use the program guide to set up recording including series. Very straighforwards. Have two remotes and switch between the two inputs via the TV remote. (smart tv)
TV needs to be able to tune in digital saorview as analog is now gone.

Brilliant stuff thanks...I actually thought that!...very good we have a smart TV...which I THINK has a Saorview tuner built in..I'm not great with tech but I don't think our BB is fast enough for IPTV ...I'll get a box with a hdd to record programs...thanks
 
Freesat plus saorview is best option unless in range of NI freeview transmitters where could go freeview plus saorview. Combo box or newer TVs generally do both of the above.
 
Both my TVs have built-in satellite tuners, but they don't support a comprehensive program guide like I was used to when I used an Android combo box. You have to tune in to a channel to pull the what's on now and next from the stream. So features like series recording are not possible.

I also have a "combo box" that combines Saorview and the free Sat TV channels in one place with epg and recording. It took a lot of effort to learn how to set up and some ongoing effort to keep it running. I really enjoyed figuring it out.

When it comes to getting free TV in my experience there's no easy way around needing some amount of technical skill and most people have no interest. If someone else sets it up for you and anything breaks you probably won't know what to do.

If you aren't willing to put in the effort with a free TV setup then I'd say keep paying for TV, put up with just Saorview or better still see if you can go with out TV entirely!
