Trick to fix squeaky floorboards...?

Anyone know of any tricks to fix creaky, squeaky floorboards?

I don't really want to get into pulling up the carpet (obviously if I have to I will) so I was wondering if anyone knew a way to lessen or stop the noise.

I seem to 'remember' from somewhere that rubbing talc through the carpet works, but I may just be making that up.

Any advice appreciated.
