We're with VHI corporate plan and the mishap happened close to a private hospital hence the reason we were taken there.

Just one comment on EU Health for travellers as it might help others: the problem that some tourists make is to go to a private doctor (ie the one that might work for a hotel) . These are private services. Always go to a public health centre and use your EHIC card.

EU countries will treat you as a local so whatever a local gets you will get.
So a Spaniard (without a medical card) will have to pay a visit to a doctor in Ireland. In Spain the health system is very good, you will not pay for a visit to a doctor for instance as this cost is covered by the equivalent of the Spanish PRSI from all workers.
France is different as there is a part that is paid by the insurance that all workers have. So the same they pay the same you will have to pay.
You will not have to pay for anything in Spain and many prescriptions are subsidised up to 40%. this is why so many people buy stuff over there.

Got a letter from AIB regarding their business card travel insurance and a change where they age limit no longer applies.

The cover is also for partner and up to two others if part of your business.

Underwriter is Chubb and they also sell directly

Had a look and it seems they will insure all ages (I made myself out to be 85 )

Circa €500 for a USA trip of 2 weeks. €700 for worldwide annual cover

I notice Ryanair is peddling annual insurance when you book a Ryanair flight. Presumably this covers Ryanair flights only? I forget the annual cost, but it did attract my eyes. I didn’t buy it.

But, the older I get, the more I think I need travel insurance. But our EHIC has been good to us for travelling within the EU. I must check with our health insurer too. I think some travel insurance is included.
