Travel insurance age 85

Trying to get travel insurance for my fit and well 85 year old grandparents to visit family in the US and it’s proving very difficult. They have private medical insurance but they won’t cover someone over 80 in the US. A few others I’ve tried will quote but won’t cover pre existing conditions. One has high blood pressure so if she was to have a stroke or heart attack she’s not covered and you can’t risk that in the US even though she’s never had any issues..

Insure and Go or Blue insurance seem to be the on,y 2 options at €450 for a 2 week trip, are there any others I have missed or anyone else that has dealt with this?
 
I see Age Action have this document but it appears to have been updated in 2016 so one would have to wonder

The one thing, that I understand that you need to be very careful about with travel insurance, is the small print. Read through the T&Cs carefully, as I have read in the past, that companies turn down a lot of claims, where people have not read the documentation carefully, and are actually not covered, for what they thought they were. So do your homework before purchasing
 
If you have VHI already, I found the annual MultiTrip policy the best. Having said that I'm not sure if its age limited.
 
VHI Multitrip wont cover someone over 80 in America, they would in Europe
others will quote but won’t cover any pre existing health issues which isn’t an option in the US.

The best we have so far is €440 each with Laya and they will cover pre existing conditions as long a you have private medical insurance which they do
 
Hi all .I am Irish citizen, male aged 76, retired and i want to travel to Spain soon for 9 weeks.[63 days].I am having difficulty getting travel insurance for more than 30 day trip. I have EHIC card,and i have Laya private health insurance which covers me for travel insurance up to 100k.Is there a wee bit of age discrimination here perhaps.Any help would be appreciated. I never had any trouble like this previously and i could travel 3 times per year on multi trip insurance for less than 100 euros..Is the EHIC and Laya any good on their own.Thanks.

Hi.Thanks for help.At the moment difficulty in getting it at all except i can take it for 30 days when it will run out and i will be without it for 33 days then.
 
But isn't it your health insurance that covers your health mishaps while you are on holidays.
Travel insurance covers travel mishaps.
 
No. Your typical health insurance policy will pay for your medical treatment in Ireland. Paying for treatment you get abroad doesn't come as standard.

So, if you fall ill or have an accident while travelling abroad, you are generally reliant on your travel insurance (or on your own resources) to pay for any treatment you get in foreign-land, and to pay the costs of medical repatriation, if that's necessary/appropriate. Once you're back on the old sod your Irish health insurer is on the hook for any further treatment (which is why, if your condition is serious/expensive/requires ongoing treatment, your travel insurer is generally keen to get you home as soon as possible).

Most will include some measure of emergency cover abroad, but where the specific travel insurance policy comes into play is repatriation costs or care beyond the initial emergency.
 
surely EHIC covers you for any health emergencies in the EU. If it's not an emergency you can always come home for treatment.

You can pay through the nose for travel insurance and it still won't cover every possible eventuality, what are you looking for cover for specifically?

EHIC will cover the basics in the public settings in Europe, insurance will add access to private facilities and services. The Europe bit is important here as the OP is travelling to the US.
 
My Flex 500 Explore with Laya covers me in Europe for 100k hospital bills per episode and up to two million for repatriation,Is this not sufficent on its own im wondering?.P.S.My luggage consists of one small bag only for under the seat in the plane and i am not really concerned about delays or cancellations.Ryanair fares are average 50 to 60 euros so not concerned about ins.for this either.Also the EHIC card covers expenses in Spain for public hospitals for illness and accident.So is further travel insurance "overkill" perhaps.
 
We did have a medical emergency abroad resulting in surgery and a stay in hospital and were flown with a cardiac nurse escort and an ambulance waiting for us at Dublin airport which dropped us at our own home.
All of the above was covered by our medical insurance.
Travel Insurance (which we also had) had nothing to do with it.

My relations (late 70's) used a company called Howden Insurance recently for a 6 week trip abroad. (I've no connection to co.)
