Transferring money from the UK.

I'm not sure which forum to put this question in, so I have it here and the business section (I hope that's okay mods!).

I need do a same day money transfer from the UK. I've had a look at the western union website and it says that there's a uk£999 transfer limit, which surprised me.

Has anyone got any other suggestions?
 
I've done this myself, I moved a large amount of money by writing out a cheque and bringing it myself to the Building society here where I had an account. I was then able to agree with the building society an exchange rate. This was before the Euro. I didn't have any problems.
