Is it possible for me to transfer the songs from my friends ipod onto my library in itunes without wiping my library completely? Thanks in advance.

Yep,
Plenty of info if you google it.
Basically you have to enable hidden folders
I think - open a windows explorer Tools -> Options -> View hidden folders.
Then connect the i-pod and navigate using windows explorer
Copy the Music folder on the i-pod to your PC's hard drive
Then in i-tunes click add folder to library and add the above new folder.

** Make sure you have the option to have i-tunes organise your Music tunred on**

Bear in mind the legal implications.

Mik, are you sure if I plug in my mates ipod I definitely won't delete my own library and replace it with his? Thanks

i wouldnt chance it until i read up on it. i bought a song for my brother on i tunes and i couldnt give it to him just wouldnt let me transfer it.

Hi NickyK
I've checked out the link from emaol, which is excellent. Have you read it yet? It'll tell you what to do (it's got a whole section on copying content from your iPod to your computer, on the left hand side of the page linked to)
Be v v v careful (i.e. do not press erase and synch or all data will be deleted from the iPod), and read all instructions fully before you do anything.
Have you backed up your iTunes library on to an external drive (external storage device)? Might be worthwhile doing in case of any disasters (can get external hard-drive relatively cheaply), and considerably cheaper than a panic attempt to get accidentally deleted material back

Hi Nicola, yeah I read the info. Seems pretty risky and I doubt I'll risk losing my music collection. I will back it up anyway, seems logical and see where I'll go from there!!! Why is it never simple!! Thanks anyway

The easiest way is to install winamp (www.winamp.com / take the free version) - it is like iTunes with the difference that you can move songs to and from any ipod you plug into the PC.

I ditched iTunes because you cannot get songs from the ipod to the PC with it.

Once i-tunes is set to manage the i-pod manually then it should be fine.
It's an option in the i-pod screen like do not sync or manage music manually

I did exactly this (except for the wiping part!) using Sharepod. Worked fine.

I'd just get a physical copy of the files. ie go to your mate's PC and into their My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music and copy the subdirectories you want onto a CD or removable storage, then import it onto your own computer. I've tried other ways and have resulted in losing half my music - obviously easily fixed when synced again with my own iTunes, but I think this is less messy.

I used a program calles senuti to do this before..

This is what I use too - it was recommended by a friend who referred to it as the cleverly-named senuti. It took me a while to work it out.
