Top soil

Hi, we have just noticed on our plans that we need to build raised banks around our house, large area, I can't fathom how many lorry loads we will need but of course we have no money left to do this and of course they won't certify our last stage payment unless we have this.
Anyone know anywhere in Leinster that is offering free top soil or a development, we live in Louth but anywhere really?
I can just see us now, going to Kildare for 4 ton, then Dublin for a further 4, Meath for 5, a nightmare!

Ok, just found out of my OH that we need from 150 to 200 ton. How will we ever find and all failing ever afford that??

just so you know thats approx 20-22 8 wheel loads
had to know where you will get it for free now, a year ago no problem but with no building going on its going to be hard to get it for free.

Thanks for that, but it sounds even more when you say it like that, I don't know what we are going to do, even if people are giving it away for free, usually 20 ton is the most you would get, if you are lucky!

It mightn't need to be done to sign off last stage payment. Talk to your engineer.

Free = impossible.

Top soil is free but digger cost of loading it and lorry cost of transport is not - I'd say 150 per 20 ton truck for transport. A 40 ton truck will not take soil as it cannot tip it with out it sticking.

Remember 9 inches of soil over stones is all you need for a garden..

Most site clearence skims off what is is called top soil but its not suitable for growing grass on. (your grass will turn yellow.) Youl still need a skim of good quality soil on top of that stuff.

I paid someone to remove many lorry loads of top soil. The stuff itself is valueless.

Thanks sfag, so basically create a mound around the house of stone and then buy the good quality top soil and pour it over the stones?

4 - 6 inch stones (or rubble) - as much as required. Then Say 7+ inches of of poor quality soil, followed by a couple of inches of good quality fertile top soil. Get advice from a garden centre.
