Tongue and groove floors

Looking for an inexpensive flooring solution for new kitchen/living extension and (current) thinking is to get soft wood tongue and groove to match existing house and maybe wax it. Has anybody tried this, and would it be a reasonable idea?

Personally I wouldn't consider a softwood floor for heavy traffic areas unless you were willing to use several coats of polyurethene varnish on it.
