Our main bathromm toilet would takes a few hours to fill up. Wasn't a major thing and i was going to get a plumber to look at it when i had a few pennies.

Stupid fella thinks he knows and can fix everything went to have a look. God knows how but there was hair stuck in the pip that fills it up.

He's now unblocked this and it wont stop filling up, water is pouring out we have to flush the toilet every min. How can i stop the water coming out.

Take the lid off the cistern and pull up the ballcock (the big red ball) by hand. Tie it up if necessary.

we've already done that. It doesn't work it's still filling up!!

He's on the phone now trying to get a plumber out, cause the cistern ( thanks for the name of it ) is filling up quicker and quicker!

There should be a silver flexible pipe feeding into the cistern.

On one end of this (close to the floor) there will be a large screw-head with the groove running in the same direction as the pipe. Turn this until the groove points across the pipe.

go to the hotpress and turn off all the valves if you dont know which is the cold feed. this will stop water from the tanks filling the cistern.
there is a small rubber valve which fits in the filler pipe this has probably got dislodged and is lying in the bottom of the cistern. You need to refit this.

At least if water is stopped you can get the new parts in am. The penny valve on the flexi pipe, mathepac refers to may not be fitted.

Thanks guy he's managed to sort it out.

You were right Sconhome the rubber valve was at the bottom of the tank.

Good to see you got sorted, must be something in the water, we have attended a dozen ballcock related problems this week alone, Today i had to unblock a bit of a bat from a ballcock, the guy's tank had three dead bats floating around. This is the same water you wash your teeth with...nice. Cover your tanks.

Btw, when the cistern filled up, did it not overflow back in to toilet pan?

I have no idea how hair got stuck in the pipe?? It was the size of a mouse!

I'm being blamed cause when i clean my hair brush i would just flush it down the toilet.

I didn't wait around or even think of that, the water just kept coming out so we had to keep flushing the chain. It probably would of done thinking it about it now that i'm calm, at the time i thought we were going to end up flooding the bathroom.

No way it was your hair, I would advice that either you or your partner take a trip to the attic and have a look in your big storage tank, it may need to be cleaned out and cover it, with anything.

well i'm glad i never touched it........ewwww and i brush my teeth with that water.

Doesn't the water from your kitchen tap come from another source? I'll be brushing my teeth at the kitchen sink from now on or use bottle water.

Usually kitchen cold water is direct from mains - all my downstairs cold water taps and the jacks are mains-fed.
