Toilet blocked by toilet freshner thingy - I think?

Hi All

I think my toilet is blocked by one of those freshner things that hooks over the side of the bowl. When I flush the toilet, the water nearly comes up to the top of the bowl and takes forever to drain away.

Is there anything i can try to do to unblock this or do I need to get a plumber?

If its going to be messy ie like lifting drains and dismantling pipes etc I think I would prefer a plumber to do the job!

Thanks

I had this problem a while ago. I shoved a garden hose down the loo (flexible enough to go round the bend), if you have access to the downpipe outside via a nearby shore you can lift the cover and go upwards too. It`s just a question of physically moving the offending blockage a little and it usually flushes happily away!
Hope it works for you.

I dont have a hose pipe at the moment - would anything else work in the mean time?

also the toilet is upstairs - could that mean that the item could be lodged anywhere in the pipe - which would mean I couldnt access it at all?

My toilet is also upstairs..the blockage is probably caught at the u-bend of the toilet itself as the previous poster said, so a short lenght of any kind of flexible `thing` even three feet might shift it. Actually the toilet being upstairs will help you as gravity will be on your side as the blockage falls downwards.
Just thought..maybe try a wire hanger. Open it out and leave the hook end there and maybe you could hook the blockage and pull it back into the bowl?..Keep your legs crossed in the meantime!!

The old-fashioned plunger should clear it. I would guess that B&Q; plumber's merchant or similar would stock them.

Depends on who went to the toilet before realising it was blocked, and what they did there, don't you think?

You wouldn't have put your hand in, trust me.

I might have for a bet.

The toilet was functioning, but slowly.

So just flush it a few times. Put bleach in it. Flush it a few more times and then it would be just clean water and perfectly safe and hygienic to put your hand in.
