I am looking for a good tiler for wall and floor tiles. Can anyone give recommendations? Does anyone know what the going price is for tiling per sq metre?

Hi

I can't recommend anyone yet as I am shopping around at the moment but the going rate seems to be €35 per square yard for floor tiles (so far all quotes I've had are in yards).

betsy clark - are you joking me

€35 per square yard for floor tiles

the going rate was 18 per square yard and should be less now with the downturn

Really!!! Sounds like someone is joking me.

Thank you so much - I've had 2 quotes of 30 and 35 per square yard, and my brother in law (tiler) confirmed that is the going rate!!!

Back to the quotes then ..... will be confirming the job in the next 2 weeks and will report back what rate we get in the end.

Should have said I got a quote of €36/m2. What I end up paying will hopefully be a different matter.
Now, if only I can figure out how to edit my posts.....

Betsy could be having marble tiles laid which is more expensive as it requires alot of work with filling and sealing.

We've picked our tiler. E5k to tile 2 bathrooms and 2 ensuites completely to roof, (normal enough tiles), a big square hallway and porch with marble - kitchen and utility 45sq ft of marble flagstone and a smallish sunroom with marble (same as hallway). TBH this guy has a fantastic reputation; I know we could get cheaper but he did reduce his marble rate somewhat and there is no point spending big on tiles to have them thrown down in any old way either.

betsy - as D2WW says its 36 euro per square metre. if ur paying that for square yard then you are being totally ripped off. marble / porcelain tiles are slightly dearer about 20 euro per square yard.

mummol - sealing the tiles requires you to wipe a sealing solution over the tiles with a rag, any child could do it. if they charge extra for "sealing" , you are also being ripped off. you will have to seal them every 2 yrs anyway yourself

Limerick boy he isn't charging extra but there is an extra charge on marble which I'm sumising is down to the thickness and problems cutting and sealing.

I'm not quiet sure how well your children are trained but mine . . . . I definitely couldn't trust to do any of the house stuff unless it involved a crayon and moms nice freshly plastered walls.

I am not a tiler but I am involved in the general business (based in Cork City & county).
Standard fitting charges I have encountered:
- Ceramic Tiles = €19-€20 per square yard (approx €23 / sq metre).
- Porcelain Tiles = €22-€24 per square yard (approx €27.50 / sq metre).
- Marble Tiles = €30-€32 per square yard (approx €37 / sq metre).

Is this like a dusty film? If so, it will eventually go after being sponged a few times.

I've clarified one thing - the quote of €35 psqy was for highly polished, rectangular shaped tiles (30cm x 60cm), which, as they are staggered, are more labour intensive to lay. So, we will be getting square tiles now, which are cheaper to lay, probably with a mid-gloss polish.

The search continues .....

Charging more to lay the tiles in the brick effect?
Now that is a joke!

One FYI however - tilers are a dime a dozen, good tilers are not!
If you spend your precious time and hard earned money on selecting and buying tiles which you're hopefully going to be looking at for a while...
Don't skimp on the quality of tiler employeed.

I recently got our kitchen floor tiled with polished porcelain tiles.

They are 300mm * 600mm, block/brick effect.

The tiler charged 600 euro to lay 25 sq.m. / 30 sq. yards, so I suppose it's 20 euro per square yard.

He also charged 100 euro to lay self-levelling floor compound onto the same floor.

He also charged 100 euro to lay self-levelling floor compound onto the same floor.

Lay? You just pour it on the floor. That's it. Sounds like a bit of a joke.

Not sure how much the stuff costs though so maybe the charge included supply of the compound also?

Levelling compound is one of those jobs that's easy the second time you do it! The first time you can't quite believe you're putting this runny slurry on the floor......

You may be better letting the tiler do it to their satisfaction as tilers are renowned on sites for their abilities to complain if things aren't completely tickety-boo.

I second the suggestion not to get expensive tiles and a cheap tiler. The good guys are still busy, downturn or no downturn.

I used a Romanian tiler and he did a beautiful job. Charged €30/sq metre for poreclain tiles, plus grout, trimming etc. (He charges more for laying porcelain). He did the Spanish Embassy residence so I thought if he's good enough for them he's good enough for me. -
