Third level fee after failing exams

Hi , My brother has just recently applied through the CAO for another college course - He failed exams in UCD for First year of his course from 2005/2006 - He took the subsequent year off and now has applied through the CAO for a different course in NUI Maynooth starting in October of this year . He did not pay and was covered for tuition fees for his year in UCD - Given that he failed will he have to pay tuition fees costing (3-4K) in order to start any new third level course ?

Yes. You receive one attempt at each year with fees covered, the rest you pay.

So... if he had completed first year and failed second year, then restarted a different course, he would pay for first year (already got it free once) and second year (ditto) but get third and fourth year free (as he had never sat a third and fourth year before).
Technically it has nothing to do with his failing, it's a general rule, one year at each year free (very poor phrasology by me, but hopefully the meaning is clear).

The majority of students who fail (at least from those I knew) do take a year out for exactly this reason. Build up the savings to pay for the tuition fees and some of the associated costs of college.
