Thermostat broken on Shower

I have a mixer shower which runs off my hot water tank. The mixer (being a slidy thing from 1-9) hasn't worked since I moved in to the house so I have to keep the temperature of the immersion at a little under 45 degrees not to scald myself. Can I dismantle this shower myself and see if there is any obvious reason why the mixer is broken or do I just have to get a plumber for the job??
 
i know from staying in hotels in one job thats its quite a common and failry easy thing to fix...not sure how easy it is for DIY
 
The thermostatic valve is defective in this instance. In most gravity fed showers this consists of a cartridge of "waxed paper" which reacts to the temperature fluctuations and regulates accordingly. If your shower is an "Aqualisa" you're in luck as they have an excellent spare parts service and carry spares for many older models. As for other brands I'm not sure. Your best bet is to take whatever details you can find and go to a plumber's merchant. The part shouldn't be expensive and is quite easy to replace.
 
Thanks Carpernter. I'm sure it's a Mira shower but can't be 100% on that. I'll pay a trip to my hardware store.

Aqualisa are without doubt the Rolls Royce of showers for the domestic market, I recently replaced an older model and the store where I bought mine will not sell any other brand. Their website is excellent also www.aqualisa.com
 
The only problem with buying spares directly from the manufacturer is that they can cost a little bit more and Aqualisa spares are difficult to come by other than on their website. Mira, Triton and Grohe spares are easier to come by though from plumbing merchants or online places like IQ Living.
