I disagree with this statement. Taking risks in the expectation of higher rewards is investment - if the stockmarkets are priced correctly then investing in stocks and shares should be an investment, on balance you should get rewarded for taking the higher risks. Taking risks knowing that on balance you will lose is gambling. Thus everyone knows that the Lotto only pays out a third, so buying a Lotto ticket is clearly not investment but is gambling.Any form of risk is gambling. Any investment beyond fixed interest / bonds / gilts are gambling as they are based on future values of property / shares etc.
my argument is based on the assumption that
buying derivatives is not a reasonable investment for
the personal investor.
