1) You can reply without quoting the post you are replying to
 • This should be the one you use most often.

2) You can quote the entire post
 • Please do not use this automatically
 • Please do not use this to quote very long posts
 • It's best to use this in a long thread where you are quoting a post which is not recent
3) You can quote one bit of a much longer post
 • This is particularly useful
(For advanced users there is a multi-quote facility which will be covered in a separate thread.)

Should I buy a house?

Would I get a mortgage on my income?

Should I go fixed or variable?

If you want to reply without quoting a post, For example:

Hi Tester

Welcome to askaboutmoney.

You need to provide more information.

Brendan

Scroll down to the end of the thread and just start typing in the text box below the post where it says Write your reply...

4834

When finished hit the Post Reply button.

If you are making the first reply to a new thread, then this is the one you should use as you don't need to quote the post.

If you are replying to the last post in a thread, then this is probably the one you should use as it should be clear that you are replying to the last post.

Should I go fixed or variable?

Your reply: Tester, you will need to provide more information.

 • You should only use this if want to reply to an older post in a thread. If you are replying to the last post, there is no need to quote it, as it should be obvious.
 • You should quote an entire post, when it is a short post.
 • If you use it for long posts, the whole thread becomes repetitive. The moderators may delete your post if you use this inappropriately

To do this, hit the Reply button (Not the +Quote button)

This is what you will see:

4835

Just start typing after the
button.

If you want to quote only a bit of the post to which you are replying e.g.
Should I buy a house?

Your reply: I think it's a great time to buy a house

Highlight the bit of the post you want to reply to.

4836

Hit Reply ( not + Quote)

You will get this:

4837

Type your reply after the
box

Then hit Post Reply

This is what happens if you hit the Reply button in response to a long post:

1) You can reply without quoting the post you are replying to
 • This should be the one you use most often.

2) You can quote the entire post
 • Please do not use this automatically
 • Please do not use this to quote very long posts
 • It's best to use this in a long thread where you are quoting a post which is not recent
3) You can quote one bit of a much longer post
 • This is particularly useful
(For advanced users there is a multi-quote facility which will be covered in a separate thread.)

This makes the thread hard to follow as there is a lot of duplication.

If you do this by accident, go back into your post and remove the quote.

Or you can edit the bit in the quote marks by deleting the bit you don't want.

If someone has a lot of questions on a topic, I sometimes have a separate reply for each question using the Highlight and Reply Button

Or I use this if someone has asked a complex question, and I can answer only one bit of it.

Would I get a mortgage on my income?

My reply: Currently banks are lending 3 1/2 times your income, so it depends on your income and how much you want to borrow.
