The future for analogue Cable TV

I'm a bit of duffer when it comes to digital TV. I still have the analogue cable NTL connection which doesn't work well with some of the new LCD TVs. The picture quality on most stations is pretty bad but for all I watch TV, I've been prepared to suffer on.

However, a sales guy called at my door over the weekend advising that analogue cable was about to be discontinued and that I would need a digital box if I wanted to maintain my viewing pleasure. Luckily for me, he had some Sky boxes in his back pocket which he wanted to give me for free. I'm sure there was a quid pro quo but I didn't listen to him long enough to find out.

I'm aware that there have been some line upgrades in the area (Dundrum) over the last few weeks but I can't see why this should mean the end for analogue.

Was this guy blowing smoke or is there something in it?

Yes well the sales guy is right that analogue is to be discontinued but not for at least a couple of years so there is no panic therefore u dont need to rush into anything.

I am always surprised when people say they get a poor analogue picture on LCD.If the signal is not good to begin with then the picture will not be good so if your signal is weak u should get on to NTL or whatever they call themselves now.If u are splitting the signal to feed extra TVs then the signal will degrade but 1 TV should not be a problem.
The big analogue turnoff will be well flagged before it happens

In exactly the same boat as you Staples and had the SKY man at the door giving me the exact same line.
He seemed incredulous that I didn't know that I must switch to digital soon, certainly before the end of the year as analogue will no longer be available (Clondalkin)
I ran him because I thought he was spinning me a yarn but maybe he's right??
Maybe my trusty old tele will cease to work very soon and I will be left out in the cold because up until now I have steadfastly refused to succumb to SKY?
Any informed people set us straight on this????

I read in the paper last week that the analogue swithoff for the RTE channels(Tv3 and Tg4 as well) is going to be 2015 now it was meant to be in 2012. I think the UK is switching off their analogue channels at the end of this year so that might affect you all right.

Besides you don't have to go with Sky you could pick up a digibox and sat on ebay or local tv shops and use the Free to air systems.

Have you contacted NTL about getting a digital decoder/ box, it is another alternative than a satelite dish with SKY?
What have your neighbours in the line of TV signals?, this can be a good pointer as to what is available in the area.
