Hi, i'm wondering if anybody could give me a rough estimate of the costs
involved in a university education here. Im trying to organise a budget in advance, and need to take in everything, from fees, books, accomodation , pocket money, etc etc. Also, if there is much difference between regional colleges and universities.
Thanks.

Do you qualify for the "one free degree"? Afaik, any person who has passed their leaving certificate in Ireland qualifies. There are also multiple grants you can get if you are a mature student (over 23).

Sorry, I didnt make myself clear. Im the parent, not the student. My kid is not yet 15 years old, so at this stage it is just thinking ahead. I havent heard of the 'one free degree'. Summer jobs and part time work aside, I just wanted to know how heavy the financial burden is usually for the parents.

Rent is heavily dependent on where they go to college. So if they go to Dublin, Cork or Galway expect to be paying rents of €400+ per month.

If they go to an IT in Waterford, Carlow, Sligo etc rent will be considerably cheaper.

Considering he is only 15, how can you be so sure as to where he will go?

Im not sure. Some of the places I mentioned here are places he wants to go because his friends are planning to go there. It doesnt cost anything to plan ahead, even if it never works out.
