The ants are back

I am already fighting a losing battle against the annual invasion of ants. I have put down the Nippon that has had some effect but they keep coming. They are under the kitchen presses and door saddle so are hard to get at. I need some other tried and tested treatments. Help!

Re: The Ants are back.

Hi There, one of the guys in work said that if you find the source of the ants and pour petrol on it that will work much better than the white powder stuff. Worth a try!

Re: The Ants are back.

Noticed one in the house yesterday. I can deal with spiders, creepy crawlies and mice without too much bother but I can't stand ants. Our house growing up was infested with them every year. The house I moved from last year used to get some ants but as soon as I saw one I would put the white powder down. Basically would put a ring of it all around the house outside and on any windowsills I saw ants near and then inside the house along the doors in the kitchen and utility room which were the worst places for them coming in. Worked pretty well, most of the time.

I have to admit that as much as I try to be ecological there's not much of any kind of logic involved in my reaction to ants and I'm happy to use the most toxic stuff around. Maybe I'd act differently I had kids or pets.

If you can find where they are comming from get some lighter fuel and squirt it down the hole, light it up and watch em burn. Fuel burns off quickly so you shouldn't do any damage to window sills etc.

Hi Grizzly,

We have them as well and have done the same as Janet with a line of powder around the house and on the windowsills also.

Have you had a read of the key post on Ants.

Try to limit any loose/open food as much as possible.

Re: The Ants are back.

Had Ants last year and found the best thing to get rid of them was the little packs that you open and leave out for them. It contains something that attracts them and they collect it and bring it back to the nest and it destroys the nest.

I think it may have been a "Raid" product, can't really remember but all hardware shops should have them.

To be honest I didn't like killing them as I admire the industrious little beggars but it was getting to the point where anything left out for a few hours was attracting them.

Re: The Ants are back.

I agree with Janet and suellen - each year we had to ring fence the home. You can often 'follow' them to a busy patch and give them an extra helping there. This has always worked for us just one application per year.

Actually, thanks for reminding me - I did have some of these at doors in kitchen last year too. Every little helps!

Janet,

You sound too much like me when it comes to creepy crawlies Have to say I didn't find those little boxes any good. The powder seemed better.

A little experiment - leave a nearly used can of coke near where they hang around and see how many accumulate. Make sure to bring it outside and turn upside down to see a near ant hill Presume that its the sugar that attracts them?

In Oz there's a product called "Ant-Rid." It's natural and kills the ants in their nest. Used to use it loads.

If you have relatives or friends in Oz they can buy it in supermarkets and ship it over (the cheap way) or you can buy it online at http://www.ecoathome.com.au.

I cannot believe it. It is only the beginning of March and we have already discovered two separate nests in our house. Normally we don't see them until April!!!

I used "Ant Stop" Bait Station. It's a round yoke where you break off little bits. They get attracted to it and bring it back to the nest. I saw about ten ants yesterday, i put that thing out (a new one) and none are here today. Worked well the last time round as well. Can't remember where I bought it, but it was Woodies i think. I'm intrigues about the Cinnamon though, will defo give this a try.

We used Ant Stop as well (from Tescos) last year and it cut them right back. I would definitely go for this product again. Years ago I rented a house in Blackrock where the kitchen was overrun with ants and we used Nipon powder and then Nipon bait to no effect whatsoever. We also tried various other ideas to no avail - thats why I was so impressed with ant stop.

See if you can lay your hands on some good old DDT(dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane). Think its banned now in developed counties for insect control but is still used for disease control. Nothing stands a chance with it.

If all else fails get an aardvark they love ants
