I'm a tax resident in Ireland, currently only paying PAYE taxes. I earn a small income from a rental property in Italy (~2500€ per year), which is taxed there. Should I report this income to the tax authorities in Ireland?
Maybe - it depends on not only your tax residency status but also your tax domicile status. This is quite complex but probably no tax is due if you do not remit the income to Ireland.
I am resident and domiciled in Ireland. Tax on rental is due in Italy according to Italian law even if I'm not resident there (and the money is pretty much entirely going to pay for taxes and maintenance in Italy).
I assumed I wouldn't get double taxed by Italy and Ireland, so I'm mainly hoping to avoid having to seek out a tax advisor in order to pay none to little tax.
Edit: it does seem from revenue that I have to declare it and offset the taxes paid in Italy.
When you say domiciled in Ireland I presume you mean you are living in Ireland.
Your tax domicile status is altogether different - and this affects the taxation of foreign income such as rental income
The double taxation treaties between EU and other countries specifically states that rental income is taxed in the country where the property is and that tax credits are available in the country of residence to curtail any double taxation.
I've been here close to a decade and I'm officially registered with the Italian authorities as being resident in Ireland - but I see the domicile status is more complicated.
For a simple life declare in your tax return. Offset what Italian tax took. Likely a very small amount due or none at all. What rate are you paying in Italy.?
