I got married back in March 2007. However both my wife and I remained "Single" as far as Revenue is concerned. I just discovered that it is more beneficial to be Jointly assessed.
Would we be entitled to a tax Refund for some of the previous years? If so how many years?
In your case,it won't make a difference. When one partner earns below the 40% tax band, and one is above, then you can move some of the 40% income into the unused 20% band
Just seeking some clarification on the issue of taxation for Civil Union/Partnership couples on behalf of a relative who is shortly to enter a civil partnership.
They both pay PAYE - one as an early retiree public service pensioner on c €30k pa gross, the other is a PAYE employee on income of around €32k pa gross
The clarification needed :
1. is there any real benefit in them signing up for joint or separate assessment(as a couple) for Income Tax purposes, given that both earnings are below the higher tax rate threshold ?
2. If there is no benefit in joint or separate tax assessment, and they wish to continue being assessed for tax as singles, do they still need to inform Revenue when they become civil partners ?
