I am currently on unpaid maternity leave, since april. Due to go back to work part time in sept. Gross income will be just over 19 pa, but only roughly e6,500 for this year. Husbands gross would be in excess of 35/36 pa.
We are currently both being taxed as single (married since 2008), what would our best option be in regards our tax for the remainder of this year and ongoing?
Joint assessment. This is a question that keeps coming up over and over and over again. People should be taught this kind of stuff prior to leaving school.
YOU CANNOT BE WORSE OFF UNDER JOINT ASSESSMENT THAN IF YOU WERE TAXED AS 2 INDIVIDUALS. You may be better off, or no different, depending on each spouse's earnings, but never worse off.
In your case you definitely would benefit, since your hubby could be getting taxed at 20% instead of 41% on a few grand of his income.
