hello,

I'd would like a bit of advice if anyone has a spare minute..
I've got marrier recently and i wanted to update my new marital status with Revenue. I was wondering what's the best way to go about it? I'm on 45k gross and my husband is on 25k. I was asked by the Revenue to fill in a ' Assessable spose election form' and i'm not sure whom to nominate as the 'assesable spose'. I am truly clueless when it comes to taxation and i'm appreciating the help. Thank you in advance!

Normally the person with the higher income is named the assessable spouse but you can choose whichever of you you want. All the letters will go out in the assessable spouse's name and they'll technically be liable for any underpayments if there are any in future years.

You can transfer your husband's unused standard rateband to yourself and pay less tax at the higher rate.
