Hi,

I've search in the forum and the revenue before asking this, I found some cases, but not quite what I needed.

I am full time employee with an Irish company. With the Pandemic I got stranded outside the country for several months, lost my rental house and ended up living with family in Portugal. That was an year ago, even though we have intentions to go back, we don't know when.

What are the implications of keep working this way, can I keep paying PAYE? Revenue is aware of the situation already.

Thanks,
Pablo

What does your employer say about the situation?

I know several firms with employees in this situation and they've all thought pretty hard about this, taken tax/legal advice in some cases, and given employees careful guidance.

Since my intention is to back they are okay with it. They haven't given much guidance to be honest.

I'm struggling to understand what tax residency means after all. If I am okay with paying taxes even if I am abroad.

I'm not the expert on tax residency. I would start with your employer.

My guess is that Irish companies with PAYE employees have to ensure that they are resident or present in the state some certain minimum of days to be legitimate PAYE employees.

Your employer should really find out if what they are doing is legal and give you guidance on that basis.
