Is it possible to claim tax relief on the costs of travel to medical appointments? A relative who lives in a rural area has incurred very significant travel costs to the nearest city in order to be treated in hospital. This includes: driving and public transport costs, parking and significant costs of staying in hotels the night before medical procedures. Can they claim back some of these costs in their tax returns? If so must they be vouched?

Some charities for the specific condition may contribute towards such costs but there does not appear to be any tax relief on it unfortunately.

I did this a number of years ago. Travel etc can be claimed but not parking fees. You would need receipts proof of appointment (possibly). Relief is at 20%. Send me a pm if you wish.
Edit this was in respect of a child I'm not sure if it can be done in the case of an adult.
There is a travel allowance for looking after sick children in hospital, you don’t get back a lot, and it is complex rules. There is nothing for adults, but there are charities. Some charities specialise in transporting patients to hospital appointments.
Or your relative could ask say a clinical nurse specialist if there was any charity associated with the unit or with the illness, they often help.
If possible also ask them to move appointments later in the day to avoid overnight stays, usually once you get to know a team they are very accommodating.
