I have been unemployed for 6 months now but continue to pay the inurances for mortgage cover, serious illness cover and VHI for me and my wife. This ammounts to over €340 a month. When I was working I got tax relief on my salary but now as I have a much lower income the relief has no effect.

Am I entitled to claim at the end of the year tha tax relief on these payments. Will a balancing statement take care of it or should I raise the matter as a seperate claim if the tax credits I have beemn given for this relief are unused?

Can't tell you about the mortgage insurance or the serious illness cover, but I can tell you that the tax relief on health insurance is at source (i.e. the premium is already reduced by the tax relief), so you don't have to make any claims for tax credits on this.

I have tax credits for the VHI as it was charges as a benefit in kind (bik) when my company paid it. Now that I pay it myself surely I am still entitled to tax relief on the payments. I am certain it is not taxed at source. All also get credits for the other serious Illness insurance.

I believe you are correct in stating that the mortgage insurance does not attract tax relief.
