tax relief on fees

In October I'll return to full time education as an mature student and will be paying fees of around €6000 per annum. My understanding is that I can claim tax relief on the fees paid (according to revenue form it31).

My question is, if say next year I work for the 3 months of the summer and say earn €10000 and these are my only earings for the year, then I won't have paid any tax and have nothing to claim tax relief on.

Am i correct in this thinking? If so will revenue issue me with a cheque for 20% of the fees paid? Or do I need to get someone else who will pay tax in the year to pay the fees on my behalf and claim tax relief through their own income?

I'd be surprised if what you propose in last sentence is allowed - in that case the someone else is not paying on your behalf given that you gave them the money in the first place.

Person who paid the fees is not the person who handed it over - it's the person whose money it is being handed over - in this case, yours.

Im in the same situation.. although i will be working all through. you can still claim but you will not receive as much as your first year studying. Is your employer contributing?

Rmelly, i understand what your saying but I would think that that's very hard to enforce.For example if you're married, who's to say what money is yours or not?In my case I'll be living with my girlfriend for the duration of the course (4 years) and at some stage she'll be using her income to support me whether it's through rent/food or fees.
