Hello All,
i looked through the internet and could not find the answer to my question. At the moment i am renting a house with a landlord. he does not actually live there but with his girlfriend som wwhere else. he said to me that he is a living in landlord because he gets tax relief.

I can not find out how much tax relief you can get. is the tax relief from the rent i am paying him? Do other outside landlord get tax more on rent?

I am wondering this cause i would like to do the same if i was buying a house and still single.

thanks for anyone help or links

It sounds as if your landlord is hoping to make use of the rent a room scheme
Rent-a-Room Relief

Where a room (or rooms) in a person’s sole or main residence is (are) let as residential accommodation, gross annual rental income of up to €10,000 in 2008 and 2009 is exempt from tax. Relief in respect of mortgage interest relief is not affected. The relevant Capital Gains Tax/Stamp Duty provisions are also not affected. For more information see Leaflet IT 70 - A Revenue Guide to Rental Income

It may be your landlords way of avoiding paying tax on the rent you pay them therefore its not official tax relief its more like tax fraude.

He is possibly also getting tax relief at source on his Mortgage Interest if the bank think he is resident there.

You are also entitled to get some tax relief on the rent you are paying. Have you applied for this ?. Your landlord will probably have to give some details of his address when you are filling out the tax claim form.

As you are the one who can claim tax relief on your rent you fill in the form. If you have the landlords address and PPS number fill them in or ask him for them. If he is not willing to give them you can still send in the claim with whatever details you have and revenue will deal with him
