Tax relief at source

I was renting a house for several years but foolishly neglected to register as a landlord for tax,3 years ago I went to an accountant to sort out my tax affairs, sorted out my arrears then and subsequently submitted my returns yearly so all good or so I thought....

Recently revenue wrote to say that TRS had been overpaid to me i.e I claimed it twice, which came as news to me and that I owed 7k,went to my friendly accountant who basically told me hard luck, you've to pay. I'm pretty sure I mentioned TRS to him he says I didn't.As it happens I made a loss from renting, after tax, as was rented at 'mates rates'

My point was even if I didn't mention he should have asked me,he says that it should have been or at least used to be in the mortgage interest cert from the bank, which it wasn't.Also my question was why it took so long for revenue to ask for it back

I certainly wasn't intentionally trying to claim twice and trusted my accountant to ask me the right questions being the subject matter expert so definitely not happy with him ( sent him a mail with a list of questions which he didn't respond to so he's washed his hands)

I know I have to pay ( am making instalments to them monthly) but is it worth asking revenue for a reduction of some sort?...or any other advice?.... Sorry for long first post:(

It's worth asking for a reduction but they won't give it. You should be grateful they are not charging you interest.

It takes Revenue time to catch up on these things as people don't do things they are supposed to.

For example when someone rents out their house they should register with the PRTB. Presumably you did not do this until you were told that you could not claim the interest without it.

Hope you are not a first time buyer for Stamp Duty and rented before the claw back period of 5 years.
