Tax refund mid year?

Hi

I was wondering if anyone has ever been in a simular suituation to myself.

  • At the start of this year my husband was out of work and his tax credits were temporarily allocated to me. As a result of this I paid less tax than I would have if I just had my own tax credits.
  • After a few months he returned to work so our tax credits were then divided between the 2 of us again.
  • I have just moved jobs so a new tax credit certificate was issued to me and my new employer showing the correct tax credits that I am entitled to.
  • I have just received my 1st pay cheque and I have been taxed well above what I should have been.
  • My employer has told me that my salary is calculated on a cumulative basis. It appears that they have looked at the total amount of tax that I have paid for the first 7 months of the year.
  • Obviously this is showing up that I have underpaid based on the new tax credit certificate details however this is because I was also using some of my husbands tax credits for a few months.
  • Is this something that my employer should rectify or should I deal directly with the Revenue?
Thanks for any information any one may have.
