hi,a friend of mine paid 9,000.00 euro in legal fees in a dispute with his ex wife to secure his house,he had to borrow 50,000.00 to pay her to have the house signed over to him,is there any way he can claim tax back on the 9,000.00 euro, any help would be appreciated, thank you.

In order to get tax back on any expense of this nature it has to be deductable from a source of income. Your friend has incurred an expense on a Capital Asset, his house. This is subject to Capital Gains Tax on Disposal but there is an exemption for Principle Private Residences so he will not get any relief for the €9,000.

thank you so much for your insightful answer,at least now he can put it behind him and move on,again thanks for the clarification, salaried.
