Hi All,

and thanks to you who take the time to read my post!

I work for an Irish company, but am based in south africa.

In 2008 i spent at least 116 days outside of ireland (all in South Africa)

In 2009 i will have spent 306 days abroad (293 in SA, 13 in OZ).

My wages are paid by the Irish office, i pay irish tax on all. I didnt notify the tax because i got advise from a friend that there were no tax breaks - perhaps wrongly?

I know there is a double taxation agreement with Ireland and SA, im just unsure as to what it entails.

Questions:

1) Is there any rebate i can claim (or am i too late)

2) if so, what is the best way to do so? Tax expert, DIY

3) if i get a tax expert what will the rough cost be? (my pretax earnings in 2009 are e43,500)

Thanks for reading and please let me know if i need furnish you with any more information.

I.

I think you need to speak to your company.

It may well be that you are tax equalised by the company - this means that you pay the equivalent of the Irish tax, and the company pays your overseas tax.

If this is the case, they should probably have arranged for Irish tax and foreign tax returns to be completed on your behalf.

If they are not organising your tax for you - are you paying any tax in South Africa????

I am paid into my irish bank account, in euros by the irish office. They deduct Irish taxes off my wages - as if i was based there.

I amnt paid any wages by the SA office.

Yes, that would be normal if you were tax equalised.

You need to ask your company.

You don't have to be paid from South Africa to be liable to taxes there - you just have to carry out work there and/or be tax resident there.
