Tax on Transfer of Share (Parent to Child)

Hi all,

Can any tell me are there tax implications for the transfer of shares from parent to child. For example:

1. Child has CAT allowance of €335k (Group A)
2. Shares originally bought for €10k 20 years ago
3. Shares now worth €50k

If the parent transfers all the shares to the child, the market value is well under the €335k threshold.

Is the parent due to pay any CGT on these shares? Or any other tax liabilities for the parent or child?

Yes this triggers a capital gain event for the donor.


If the shares are not held in paper certificate form (a gradually disappearing instrument) then presumably you'd have to get them transferred into the child's name?
