i'm thinking of going semi private in the rotunda hospital to give birth. does anyone have any idea how much this would cost, given the fact that my private insurance wont cover it, as i wont be with my insurer for the required 52 weeks when i do give birth? and how much can you then claim back on tax?

All Rotunda prices here.

You can claim 20% back on tax.

Even if you budget for a normal delivery and a 3 night stay, you might end up with a big bill,
if you or the baby have any medical problems. You should check this with the hospital, but AFAIK,
if you check in as a semi-private patient, you cannot change to a public patient in the middle of your stay.

Thanks, this is really helpful. Do you have any idea if you can switch from public to semi private after you have delivered, if you wanted a quieter room for a couple of nights sleep?

I wouldn't even dream of doing that (switching from public to semi-private after delivery). Chances are that even if you are semi-private you may only get a public ward anyway due to demand. That was certainly my experience last year. Any benefit from going semi-private is to be had in the ante-natal visits i.e. less waiting time and nicer waiting room.

thanks very much for that. i actually went private the first time round and like you i was in a public room for the first night (8 in a 6 person room).
the only worry i have with going public this time is do you know if the waiting times for the scans are really long? i will need to take time off work for those visits. sorry for all these questions, you're being so helpful! I'm based in the UK at the moment so I can't really ask anyone locally about this.

If you are a public maternity patient, you will get one scan, if you are lucky, unless you have a medical problem, or the Dr has a particular concern about the baby.

In the Coombe, all appointments for the radiology Dep are the same, public or private. I was waiting about 40 minutes, don't know if this is typical,

You can pay a private clinic for a scan, if you wish.

so in the last few weeks before you give birth, you dont get regular scans every two weeks when you go public? you only have the 20 week scan and that's it?

You would be well advised to check out www.rollercoaster.ie which is a fantastic website for all sorts of pregnancy related questions including those about whether to go public, Semi-P or Private in Ireland.
