Tax on Maternity Benefit

My wife has been off on Maternity leave for the last three months and is in receipt of maternity benefit.

My understanding was that she would receive her normal pay less the maternity benefit, i.e. come out with the same amount as normal. However looking at her last three payslips (paid monthly) the total amount she has received has been different each month.

I did a bit of digging around on the Revenue website and it says that maternity benefit is taxable but no PRSI or USC is applicable. To me this would mean that there should only be a minimal different between the amounts each month (Maternity benefit is paid weekly so she received a different amount each month) however there is circa €200 difference between two months and €100 (compared to the first month) the next month.

I am going to contact payroll however they are very slow to reply so thought i might be able to get the answer here quicker!

I think she should contact payroll herself. It's unlikely that they will discuss her pay with you. Confidentiality etc!

she has already email them to say I have permission to discuss her affairs. We work for the same company.
