Tax Form 11S

I am a paye worker with a self-employed spouse and I have received form 11S three years running. I had been told this form is sent randomly but I can't see how it's random when this is the third year I've received it. Last year I was told as the paye worker I'm the assessable spouse but that makes no sense either.

Anyway, I'm very confused about this year's form as it asks me to complete a self-assessment with payment by Oct 31st but I'm a paye worker so don't understand how I'm supposed to file a self-assessment and don't think I owe revenue any money if it's deducted from my wages by the employer automatically.

Can anyone shed light on the how/why of this form?

If your spouse is self employed then they have to file a tax return.

If you and your spouse are jointly assessed then both your income goes on the return. If you don't wish to be jointly assessed then you should talk to your spouses accountant and make arrangements.

If you don't want to be the assessable spouse then contact the tax office and nominate your spouse.

If your or your spouses income is below €32,800 and the other higher than that you are better off jointly assessed.
