We recently got married and we were wondering are we entitled to extra tax allowances compared to being single?

You can share your unused tax credits and/or bands to maximise take home pay.For example,if one of you was on the lower rate band and one was on the higher rate, you could transfer any unused band from the lower paid partner to the higher paid partner to move some of their income from 40% to 20%.
If you are not registered to PAYE anytime,do so,as you can then do this yourself.
If you post up your two salary levels, someone here can tell you if you can take advantage of this.

Thanks Vandriver

I am a self employed sole trader - € 50,000 p.a.

I think something that married couples should bear in mind is that joint assessment cannot be claimed for a previous year.

I have seen many posts on AAM, were couples lost the opportunity to benefit from spousal transfers of credits and rates because they did not claim on time.

While joint assessment is currently of no benefit to you, it is no loss either.

If your circumstances change – for instance if one of you were to suffer an income decrease, you should then apply for joint assessment immediately.

As a footnote, joint or separate assessment can be claimed for the year(s) after the year of marriage.
