Tax Band Allocation Query

Hi,

I have a query about tax bands for a married couple (jointly accessed).
I am on a wage of €46000 and my spouse got a job in Aug on €44000.
He was out of work from Jan to Aug.
Do we pay 20% tax on €69,100 or is it reduced because he won't work a full year?

Also what would be the best way to divide up the bands (for the remainder of 2018) given our above salaries ?
TIA

Rachel

Hello

The rate bands are not reduced for the year..

Was your husband in receipt of some social welfare for the earlier part of the year.. if so what type?
Generally social welfare is taxable..

Are we correct to assume he will earn about 18,500 for the remainder of the year?

Thanks for reply Mary.
Yes - he got JSB, so as far as I know taxable.
He will get approx. €20,000 for Aug-Dec.

Hello

In that case I would suggest you allocate as follows:

You 43,550

Husband 25,550.. Revenue may adjust this downward to tax / take into account the JSB (as it is taxable) ..

For 2019 I probably just do it straight down the middle with regards rate bands
