Tax back on tuition fees

Afternoon All

I paid fees in 2009 for ACCA (Chartership in Accounting) course which ran August - December. This is just one exam from 15.

In the past (for all the ACCA exams Ive done over the years) I've simply just sent in the receipt to revenue post year end and then received a cheque after year end for 20% of the invoice.

Now I did this for my 2009 course and have gotten a letter back saying it must be a course >2 years & that theres no monies due.

But in their list: -
Part-time undergraduate courses in public and private colleges (PDF, 237KB)

They have the course for ACCA.

No ACCA course is at least 2 years old, so I cant see why its approved in this, but then rejected on first principles.

I can see on the main page
that they have this condition about 2 years, but ive been claiming for years for my ACCA exams.

2 questions: -
Should I ring and say that I am due my 2009 cheque on the basis that all prior years were paid?

But if I do this, whats the likeliehood of them saying that none of the years were eligible resulting in a clawback from me?

All advice / experience much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I would ring them and query 2009 alone. The course itself is over 2 years duration as you dont gain the full qualification by doing one part of 15. I have made claims for courses like this where students complete parts of the course in their own timeframe and they are allowed (as long as the specific course is on the list).
It is possible they wouldnt process it without the tuition fees claim form, so they may request that you complete that before granting the relief.

I had a somewhat similar situation -- not ACCA though -- and was wondering the same thing. Do I ring or not ?? In the end decided to contact them and query it. They said I needed proof of the course duration and other details regarding exam structure etc. What I did was to send them a letter from my institute stating that " joe bloggs is a student of..... and is studying at ... and has paid fees of €XXX in the year 2009.

I stuck in a brochure about the course, the type of thing you get if you enquire initially and sent it off.

Solved the problem,

hope this helps
